Analysis of Decoration and Furniture

Decoration, a form of art, expresses an individual and the circumstances that created it. The degree of expression though varies with each human creation due to individual taste and training.

Interior decoration, an art with a language of its own, expresses the character of the owner of a dwelling in the same manner with the use of the details of furnishings and the enrichment in their decorating.

It is important to note that expensive interior decoration unless used with proper discretion in a suitable environment may express lack of culture and gaudiness while gentility and charm of character can be expressed using simple and inexpensive deco.

The great and most obvious artistic errors are avoided even by those with little knowledge, though avoiding smaller errors often require training.

Interior decoration should express the general conditions of period and place as well as the purpose of an object or a room. For example, the objective when decorating a dining room is to create a suitable environment for dining with comfort and pleasure. This should be achieved using the variable conditions in the room such as the color and material of the wall coverings, the design of the furniture, the use of pictures, etc.

In a situation where an existing theme or a scheme is available, the design may be largely dependent on objects that are essential to the theme whereas a decorator is able to determine the most appropriate theme when they begin with a blank canvas.

Furniture, rugs, pictures, hangings and architectural features such as mantelpieces, door and window casings, and paneling can be used to create endless possibilities with interior decoration. Regardless of the budget available, suitability is the key purpose in decorating and the room’s purpose and the attractiveness to the occupant are also important factors to be considered.

The empirical standards and formulas established over time play an important role in guiding especially the inexperienced decorator are valuable in avoiding the majority of the decorative problems.
