Choosing Flooring for Your Home
Lifestyle, budget, climate, style, comfort and degree of use are all important factors to be considered when choosing the right flooring for your home.
1. Lifestyle
Depending on your lifestyle you can choose from a range of flooring options available such as hardwood, laminate, ceramic tiling and carpet. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. For example hardwood flooring demands the highest maintenance in comparison to the other options mentioned while it is easy to clean and can damage easily. Carpets on the other hand can be easily cleaned. Laminate flooring gives the look of hardwood without the hassle of high maintenance.
2. Budget
Hardwood and laminate flooring are the most expensive types while ceramic tile and carpeting are generally less expensive. There is a variety of hardwoods available, the most popular types being oak, maple and cherry. American cherry which is a light brown that darkens overtime is a soft wood and is one of the most expensive woods. Brazilian cherry which is more readily available and therefore less expensive is a good substitute. Maple, a durable option due to its hardness though is more prone to stains and shrinking and swelling due to weather conditions. Oak flooring which has a look that is less refined than cherry is the least expensive of the hardwood types mentioned. Red oak, a very hard wood that is golden in color with red undertones is the most popular choice in hardwood flooring.
The more durable and easily maintained and hence more economical laminate flooring is a great substitute for hardwood flooring as it could imitate the look of any type of hardwood.
Ceramic tiles are largely cost effective as they are easy to install.
When choosing carpets, it is important to bear in mind that depending on the type of carpet you choose, it could be the least expensive or the most expensive option.
