  • A campaign encouraging people in Dundee to donate their unwanted furniture to those in need is being launched today.

Furniture re-use projects Starter Packs and Transform are joining together to urge local people to donate good-quality items which could be re-used.

The scheme has been organised by Waste Aware Scotland and the Community Recycling Network for Scotland, which repre- sents more than 50 furniture re-use projects across Scotland.

It is being piloted in Dundee, Glasgow and the Highlands before it is introduced nationally over the next year.

The Dundee charities help vulnerable people and families by providing equipment to help them make a start in their new homes.

Waste Aware Scotland claims that good-quality items are ending up in landfill sites when they could still be put to good use.

New figures released by the network also show that 43% of furniture re-use charities have seen a reduction in donations over the last 12 months while demand for their services is expected to increase.

Dundee City Council’s environmental services convener Councillor Jimmy Black also encouraged people to think twice before binning their household goods.

He said: “When homeless people move into a new tenancy, they often have no furniture, or very little.

Still others laze around a coffee table with their legs rested on it. Overall, this piece of sheer design and beauty can single-handedly change the way the entire living space looks.

Today, ottoman style coffee tables have cut the right corner with the masses. These can be created in top grain leather and may also come in the quilted format. Various other ottoman coffee tables also come in glass and wood but then this is less in sync with the ottoman product and more in keeping with the urgent need of customization. In fact, ottoman coffee tables worked in chic, painted marble is also in. it can also be pushed in, in a riot of colors.

While the Marcel Breuer’s keep being chic and really elegant with their minimal work and also keeps pushing metal legs with a humble patchwork for the table bit, Ottoman kept up to its lineage. These are not the simple elegant one but the grand, resplendent ones.

Ottoman furniture can provide your home with a designer look that is seeped in a timeless beauty. Yes, these can be used as footstools but the most opportune use of an ottoman coffee table is to use it for drinking coffee. Tips for purchasing wooden furniture    Author:

When purchasing furniture for your home, all you want is to get the most for your money. Therefore you always look for a good piece of furniture of quality craftsmanship that is going to last at least for a few years.

Firstly, you should know how much you can afford to spend before you go to shop for your furniture. If you cannot spend a lot, then you can search through local newspapers for second hand good quality furniture. You can also find inexpensive used furniture at auctions, at yard sales or through friends.

During Summer months, due to the holidays consumers spend money on holidays items, and are less likely to spend much on wooden, so you can find good deals of furniture through your dealer.

Another thing to keep in mind is how you are going to get your purchase home. Most retail stored do deliver, but smaller stores do not. In such situations and when purchasing a large item, you need to take a truck with you.

If you are purchasing used furniture, or a display items from a retail store, sometimes there may be scratches or marks which you can take off with a good wood cream or you can sand the furniture down to get a fresh look and then seal the wood with better protection. You also need to look at how stable the furniture you are buying, whether it’s wobbly or uneven. Check also whether corners are pressed together tightly. These furniture, ie. drawers, desks or entertainment stands have to be sturdy as possible, because they are going to hold many valuables in your home.

If the furniture you are purchasing include drawers of any type, look for dovetail joints on the backs & fronts of the drawer. These type of wood will last longer. Also, if you are purchasing a wood table, make sure that when you put the center piece ( called the leaf) in that, it is well supported by the other portions of the table.
